“The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power” debuted its second season nearly two weeks ago, and in that time (11 days) the new run has amassed 40 million viewers across the four episodes currently available.
Deadline reports that the numbers come from an internal memo sent to staff on Tuesday by Head of Amazon MGM Studios Jennifer Salke.
The show has been No. 1 on Prime Video globally, and is already one of the streamer’s top five TV seasons of all-time in terms of total viewership through eleven days.
Tens of millions have also reportedly tuned in to the first season since early August, likely rewatching or catching up ahead of the second season’s debut.
She adds that “an impressive amount of our Rings of Power customers [are] coming from outside of the U.S., which is a testament to the show’s resonance with global audiences”.
Though numbers are huge, this follows on from a recent report by third party analytics firm Samba TV which says ‘Rings of Power’ has struggled to match its first season audience and is down around 50% in its debut weekend.
To put that in comparison, HBO’s “House of the Dragon” saw a 22% decline for its Season 2 premiere – but was able to grow over the course of the season.
Amazon touted that the first season launch saw a jaw-dropping 25 million viewers turning in on for the show’s opening weekend, meaning it very likely hit that 40 million mark much sooner than 11 days. That said, viewership for the second season is likely to be far less front-loaded than the first one was.
