David Fincher’s name has been thrown around in relation to an endless list of projects. His last project was the Michael Fassbender-led thriller The Killer for Netflix. He’s been rumored to be working on a Chinatown prequel series, and a new adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s Strangers on a Train.

The latter has Ben Affleck attached and Brad Pitt lined up for a role. So it looked like that might be his next project.

Not so, says both Jeff Sneider and World of Reel. They are reporting that Fincher’s next film will be Squid Game: America.

With Squid Game season 2 coming, and the original still among the highest-rated shows on Netflix, they report Fincher has selected this as his project and has recruited British writer Dennis Kelly (Black Sea) to help him develop it.

With the title Squid Game: America, it doesn’t take a genius to be able to figure out the core plot. Netflix chief Ted Sarandos dismissed the idea of an American remake once, but having Fincher on board would likely be enough to persuade him.

Squid Game (Korean: 오징어 게임) is a South Korean dystopian survival thriller created by Hwang Dong-hyuk.

The series revolves around a secret contest where 456 players, all of whom are in deep financial hardship, risk their lives to play a series of deadly children’s games for the chance to win a ₩45.6 billion prize. The series’ title draws from a similarly named Korean children’s game.

Hwang conceived the idea based on his own economic struggles, as well as the class disparity in South Korea and capitalism.

Squid Game: Season 2 will debut on the service in December.
