Five months after Marvel Studios fired “X-Men ’97” creator Beau DeMayo, the writer has claimed that Marvel has stripped him of his credited work on the show’s second season.
News broke in March, just one week before “X-Men ’97” premiered, that Marvel had fired DeMayo who had already completed writing duties for two seasons. No reason for the firing was given.
On Thursday, DeMayo revealed that in June he posted a piece of fan-art of himself as a shirtless Cyclops on Instagram to mark Gay Pride Month. Shortly after, he claims Marvel sent a letter notifying him that they had stripped him of his second season credits due to the posting.
He added: “Sadly, this is the latest in a troubling pattern I suffered through while on working on #XMen97 and #Blade. I’ll have more to say soon but must take a step back from social media to find a safer space for me to be out, proud, and nerdy. Stay tuned.”
DeMayo had spent several years at Marvel working on a draft of the “Blade” script as well as on the TV series “Moon Knight”. He added in the multi-part post he was “so grateful to have worked on #XMen97” and “the support fans have shown is so touching”.
In the wake of that posting, the company has now responded and offered a statement to both THR and Variety saying DeMayo’s firing occurred after an internal investigation revealed ‘egregious’ findings:
“Mr. DeMayo was terminated in March 2024 following an internal investigation. Given the egregious nature of the findings, we severed ties with him immediately and he has no further affiliation with Marvel.”
No specifics of the findings have surfaced, but sources for both trade publications are reportedly alleging sexual misconduct and claim that DeMayo repeatedly violated his termination agreement – the latter being apparently what led to the removal of his Season 2 credits.
“X-Men ’97” was a hit with audiences and critics, earning Marvel Studios its first perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score and DeMayo an Emmy nomination. Matthew Chauncey is taking over writing on season three following DeMayo’s firing.
