“Batman: Caped Crusader” has launched its first full season on Amazon Prime Video and so far the reception has been very good.
Though dubbed a spiritual successor to the iconic 1990s “Batman: The Animated Series,” the series is something different again – adopting that show’s more grounded noir elements, art deco style and adult sensibility but making some key changes to characters and hit emotionally differently to ensure it’s not a simple repeat.
That was part of the draw for Bruce Timm, one of the key masterminds behind the original series.
In a new interview with The Wrap, Timm revealed that Warner Bros. asked him several years ago if he wanted to pick up where he left off (ala “X-Men ’97”) but simply doing more episoded didn’t appeal to him:
“They said, ‘Hey, how would you feel about going back and making some more Batman: The Animated Series episodes?’ And I’m like, ‘Nah, we’d been there, we’d done that.’ I wasn’t interested in just revisiting that world.”
Though he politely declined, and even considered doing a “Justice League” series for a time, he came back around to the idea of a younger Bruce Wayne in his early crime-fighting days:
“The more we started talking about it, it was like, ‘Okay, that’s interesting. That’s interesting.’ And then we got really excited about it.”
Originally developed for Max, the series was sold to Amazon Prime who renewed it for a second season last year. No word as yet regarding when that second season will go to air.
