Irish actor Dónal Finn has scored the role of brilliant strategist and cunning archnemesis James Moriarty in filmmaker Guy Ritchie’s new “Young Sherlock Holmes” series at Amazon Prime Video.
He’ll join Hero Fiennes Tiffin (“The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare”) in the lead role of a 19-year-old Holmes in the series inspired by Andy Lane’s novels that reimagine Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famed detective.
In the show, Sherlock is disgraced, raw, unfiltered, and unformed, when he finds himself caught up in a murder mystery at Oxford University which threatens his freedom.
Diving into his first-ever case with a wild lack of discipline, he manages to unravel a globe-trotting conspiracy that will change his life forever.
Specifics of how future professor Moriarty figures into the narrative are unclear. Joseph Fiennes, Natascha McElhone, Colin Firth, and Zine Tseng co-star while Matthew Parkhill serves as the writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Ritchie directs and is one of multiple executive producers.
Finn is best known for taking over the role of Mat Cauthon in the second season of Amazon’s fantasy series “The Wheel of Time”. His other credits include “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” and “The Witcher”.
