By Even with expectations and projections revised upward, Pixar’s “Inside Out” sequel has kept climbing and climbing this weekend and is on track for a much bigger debut than expected.
Following a massive $62 million haul on Friday (including $13M in previews), the film is now on track for a massive $140-150 million domestic opening weekend. Rival studios suggest it could hit closer to $160 million.
It’s now potentially on track to be the second highest opening for an animated movie of all-time behind “Incredibles 2” ($182.6M) and ahead of “The Super Mario Bros Movie” ($146.3M). Overseas it’s set to score a further $110.8 million.
It will be the first film since “Barbie” last year to cross $100 million in its launch. The film is dominating cinemas, accounting for 70% of the entire box office weekend with the whole box-office expected to take in $214 million across all movies – up 31% on last year.
Reviews are also glowing – 93% from critics and 96% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and an A CinemaScore in audience exit polls.
“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” is also a winner in its second weekend – the film on track for a $31.5 million sophomore haul – a drop of just 44% which is on par with the prior film which fell 45% in its second weekend.
Everything else is pretty much left in the dust with “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” coming in third with $5.4 million and “The Garfield Movie” in fourth with $5.3 million. “IF” rounds out the top five with $3.6 million.
