Actor Robert Downey Jr. left the Tony Stark/Iron Man role five years ago with the release of “Avengers: Endgame” and now, in a new interview with fellow actor Jodie Foster, says he’s more open to returning to the part than ever before.
Foster and Downey Jr. find themselves in similar positions when they sat down for Variety’s Actors on Actors series. Both are veteran actors with long careers and a colorful relationship with Hollywood.
Both also had Oscar nominations for supporting roles in films last year with Downey Jr. winning his, and both are coming off recent acclaimed work in an HBO series this year (“True Detective: Night Country,” “The Sympathizer”).
Asked by Foster about the possibility of going back to the Tony Stark role, he says:
“It’s just crazily in my DNA. Probably the most like-me character I’ve ever played, even though he’s way cooler than I am. I’ve become surprisingly open-minded to the idea.”
It follows recent comments from actor Jeremy Renner, who indicated he’d be open to returning to the MCU so long as the script is good and the reason for everyone’s return makes sense.
All this seems to be a tease for “Avengers: Secret Wars,” an upcoming film expected later this decade which would allow for multiversal variants of characters we know to combine.
