The poor Summer box-office continued this weekend as John Krasinski‘s original family film “IF” launched and came in under expectations.

The Ryan Reynolds-led film pulled in an estimated $31.5 million domestic debut – a far cry from the $35-40 million start suggested by prerelease tracking.

Whilst critics definitely weren’t fans of the film at just 53% on Rotten Tomatoes, one thing going in its favor is audience opinion with the film landing an A CinemaScore. The film is also drawing an ethnically diverse audience.

Another opener this week was Renny Harlin’s horror tale “The Strangers: Chapter 1” which is actually outperforming expectations – on track to land in third with $12.4 million which is far better than the $7-9 million projected.

The third opener on the other hand is coming up short with the Amy Winehouse biopic “Back to Black” taking in just $3 million as opposed to the $4-6 million hoped for. Reviews were not kind.

In second place will be “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” the only summer event film so far to beat expectations. It looks set for a $25 million haul in its second weekend.

“The Fall Guy” is tipped to take fourth with $8 million for a domestic total of roughly $69 million through Sunday. It will be hitting PVOD early this coming week.
