IMAX has revealed its 2025 slate, announcing at least fourteen films that qualify under the ‘filmed for IMAX’ label.
Movies under this banner were shot on IMAX film or IMAX-certified cameras. The number for 2025 is more than double that of any previous year.
It begins with Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: Brave New World” on February 15th, then the untitled Ryan Coogler/Michael B. Jordan period vampire film on March 7th.
On May 2nd is Marvel Studios’ “Thunderbolts*”, then “It Follows” director David Robert Mitchell’s new sci-fi film “Flowervale Street” starring Ewan McGregor and Anne Hathaway on May 16th.
A week later on May 23rd is the next “Mission: Impossible,” followed a few weeks later on June 13th by the live-action “How To Train Your Dragon” which just wrapped filming.
Then Joseph Kosinski and Brad Pitt’s untitled F1 film pulls up on June 27th, followed by James Gunn’s “Superman” on July 11th and Marvel Studios’ “The Fantastic Four” on July 25th.
The Chris Pratt-led sci-fi “Mercy” arrives on August 15th, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Bride of Frankenstein-revision “The Bride!” is on October 3rd, and “TRON: Ares” gets on the grid October 10th.
Finally there’s Marvel Studios’ “Blade” on November 7th and a Chinese New Year title to be confirmed for January 29th.
IMAX has also indicated Francis Ford Coppola’s just-premiered Cannes entry “Megalopolis” would get a global IMAX release.
The company is coming off major successes of the past year with “Oppenheimer” pulling in more than $190 million worldwide from the format, while “Dune: Part 2” has made $145 million from the giant screens – around one-fifth of its gross.
Even though IMAX screens make up fewer than 1% of total screens worldwide, in the first quarter of this year they accounted for 3.4% of global box-office and 5.9% of domestic box-office.
