Over the past decade, ever since Disney started rolling out new “Star Wars” works, the fandom has taken issues with the films and shows to differing extents.

Whilst the writers/directors/showrunners are often praised for the successful ones, when it comes to the misfires or duds the target of any backlash is often focused on perceived decisions by Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy.

Kennedy herself has also been the target of some parts of the fanbase who believe she’s pushing a political agenda and the overall creative problems with “Star Wars” all center on that as opposed to shortcomings within individual works. Not helping was “South Park” releasing a special years ago that satirised Kennedy doing just that.

Now, Puck News’ Matthew Belloni on his The Town podcast (via The Direct) says according to his sources, Kennedy being dubbed a ‘woke warrior’ by members of the fanbase is far from an accurate portrayal:

“Kathleen Kennedy is not… That whole ‘South Park’ thing was… It was funny, but it wasn’t accurate. She kind of has to be convinced, from everything I’ve been told, she kind of has to be convinced to do this stuff. And there’s still never been a female director of a ‘Star Wars’ movie. I’m very critical of Kathleen Kennedy, but I don’t think she’s gone overboard on the diversity stuff.”

The comments come ahead of the “Star Wars” TV series “The Acolyte” launching in June and series star Dafne Keen telling EW that it aims to beat one of the most celebrated lightsaber battles in the history of the franchise:

“We want to top the Darth Maul fight – the most iconic fight, I think, in the ‘Star Wars’ cinematic universe. It’s such an amazing fight and we were all so excited about the saber fights. There’s such a skill and a craft to it that it feels so OG ‘Star Wars’ and feels so impressive when you see it as a viewer.”

In addition, The Hot Mic reports that “Supergirl” alum David Harewood has joined the cast of the series in an undisclosed small role.

“The Acolyte” premieres on Disney+ on June 4th and comes ahead of launches of “Skeleton Crew” later in 2024 and “Andor: Season 2” in early 2025.
