Filmmaker James Cameron has had several projects ‘stuck in development’ over the decades with the likes of “Avatar” and the Cameron-produced “Battle Angel Alita” taking two decades or so to come to fruition.
Cameron was the guest of honor of La Cinemateque in Paris this week for a masterclass session following the screening of his 1984 classic “The Terminator”.
Participating in a Q&A session, Cameron offered a surprise update on another long-gestating passion project of his – the remake of 1966 sci-fi classic “Fantastic Voyage”.
That film follows scientists discovering technology that can miniaturize matter by shrinking humans and sending them inside a body’s bloodstream. Cameron says:
“We’ve been developing it for a number of years, and we plan to go ahead with it very soon. Raquel Welch is not available, but we think we can make a pretty good movie.”
Cameron was linked to the project back in the late 1990s, and had written a screenplay at the time. Then, in 2016, Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro was hired to direct.
Both del Toro and Cameron are currently busy with “Dr. Frankenstein” and “Avatar 3” respectively and have other projects on their slate.
Cameron in particular reaffirms to Le Figaro he plans to “continue working on the [Avatar] franchise until 2031.” He also took time out to praise Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” movies saying they are “much more convincing” than the Lynch adaptation.
