By Dan Lin begins his tenure as the head of Netflix’s film division this week and THR has done a story on the incoming executive and what his plans are for shaking things up with the streamer’s slate as he takes over from the exiting Scott Stuber.
Lin was reportedly blunt in his assessment of Netflix’s slate with the company’s CCO Bela Bajaria, indicating that the “movies weren’t great and the financials didn’t add up”.
Lin has a reputation for coming in on budget with his projects, and in his new position he will control a budget far superior to anything available in contemporary Hollywood.
The trade says Lin has poured over reams of viewership data: minutes watched, audience habits, likes and dislikes, etc. and plans to use that data to shape the company’s new film slate which insiders tell the trade “will be made up of a majority of midsized offerings”.
This fits in with the company having had its biggest hits with comedies, rom-coms and family films so far – all of which can be made fairly cost-effectively. Added to that will be a handful of big movies and awards contenders.
The report indicates the overall slate “may be smaller than those working with Netflix are accustomed”.
