More details about the potential future of HBO’s “Euphoria” have emerged via an extensive new report at Variety and things don’t sound good for the acclaimed and controversial series.
As we know, HBO officially delayed production on the show’s third season earlier this week from a planned late spring start. The network says they “remain committed to making an exceptional third season” but are allowing cast to pursue other opportunities.
However multiple outlets are suggesting that no-one is certain a third season of the show will happen at all as there’s disparate and clashing visions for what comes next.
The trade indicates creator Sam Levinson, who exerts full creative control over the show, proposed his vision for the season to the network last year. It was to feature a time jump five years into the future.
As the early scripts started coming in post-strike, said scripts reportedly “didn’t pass muster with Zendaya” even as the network was said to be very happy with them. Levinson however had begun overhauling his plans following the death of actor Angus Cloud and producer Kevin Turen.
Soon the revised scripts were handed in that had a new arc for Zendaya’s Rue. This time it was HBO who was unsatisfied with what they were seeing as it “didn’t feel like the show tonally”.
HBO reportedly explored other options, including the possibility of Levinson himself exiting the show. The idea of a movie was also brought up and discarded as it seems the cast is contracted for a third season and are “truly committed” to ending the show properly.
As it stands, the network is expected to come back to the cast in October with a firm filming plan for 2025 and a likely reduced episode count for the third season. Levinson is also “taking another swing at the material” and creative conversations continue between him and HBO.
Adding to the complication is Zendaya’s “Spider-Man 4” commitment as the script for that film is still being worked on, and no director or start date is yet set.
