Netflix will reportedly allow box office numbers to be reported for six upcoming films receiving theatrical releases – the first time the streamer has done so.
One of those will be their major awards contender – the Cannes-premiering generational queer drama “La Bola Negra” opening next month. The ensemble film, which stars Penélope Cruz, will receive the longest theatrical rollout that Netflix has given any of its films so far at 46 days.
Other titles set to have their numbers revealed are Danny Boyle’s British tabloid drama “Ink,” David Fincher’s “The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth,” Greta Gerwig’s “Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew,” Peter Berg’s period sports drama “The Mosquito Bowl,” and the animated “Charlie vs. The Chocolate Factory”.
The “La Bola Negra” theatrical window record will quickly be broken by both ‘Charlie’ and ‘Narnia’, which are getting 47-day and 50-day runs, respectively.
The news comes via Variety, with various industry sources suggesting the streamer is finally inching closer to embracing traditional theatrical exhibition.
That comes as streaming originals such as “War Machine” and “The Rip” made up 12 of the top 20 most-watched general audience movies around the world in the past year according to Nielsen.
