Spoken about in hushed tones, and a long-standing personal passion project for Francis Ford Coppola, Megalopolis is complete and it has been screened for the first time.
Coppola self-financed the project, and Deadline has reported that a first screening was held in the morning towards the end of last week at Universal’s CityWalk IMAX Theater in Los Angeles.
It was an invite-only affair, with attendees including Angelica Huston, Nicolas Cage, Andy Garcia, Spike Jonze, Al Pacino, Jon Favreau, Colleen Camp, Roger Corman, Darren Aronofsky, Cailee Spaeny, and cast members Shia LaBeouf and Talia Shire.
Megalopolis stands at 133 minutes without credits.
According to reports, the story begins with the destruction of a New York City-like metropolis after an accident brings clashing visions of the future.
On one side is ambitious architectural idealist Cesar (Adam Driver) who wants to embrace the future and build a utopia with renewable materials. On the other is City Mayor Frank Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito) who wants a more conventional business-as-usual rebuild strategy. Caught in between is the mayor’s socialite daughter Julia (Nathalie Emmanuel), a restless young woman looking for deeper meaning in her life.
Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza, Chloe Fineman, Kathryn Hunter, Dustin Hoffman, D.B., Sweeney, Jason Schwartzman, Baily Ives, Grace Vanderwaal, and James Remar all build out the ensemble cast.
Coppola is now seeking a distribution partner, and the choice of partner will drive the premiere date and location, plus the roll-out plan.
