Godzilla and Kong return in “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” and bring plenty of destruction and cutting-edge FX with them.
Picking up after the events of “Godzilla vs. Kong”; the movie finds Kong living a solitary and lonely life as he battles to survive in Hollow Earth while Godzilla monitors and protects the surface from other Titans.
The two Titans are under constant observation from Monarch and Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall). Ilene is struggling with her adopted daughter Jia (Kaylee Hottle), who is struggling to adapt to the world and is troubled by visions that something is very wrong.
When a listening post goes silent, Kong appears, and Godzilla goes on the move, Ilene, Jia, and her companions Trapper (Dan Stevens), and Bernie (Brian Tyree Henry), venture to Hollow Earth and discover a very big threat and an ancient mystery along with several dangerous twists and turns.
In a race against time; the two Titans must team up and battle to save the day and leave a path of destruction in their wake.
“Godzilla Minus One” gave audiences a character driven story that featured Godzilla while this entry puts the emphasis clearly on the visuals at the expense of characters and plot.
The film has an abundance of visual FX and loud sound and music which really set the tone well but cleary shows the differing styles as the much larger budget was clearly focused on how much visual artistry can be applied.
The result of which is an entertaining genre film that does not break new ground but delivers what fans of the recent series have come to expect and will likely set the stage for the next film.
