By “The Black Phone,” “Doctor Strange” and “Sinister” filmmaking team of Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill are reuniting for a new take on a classic noir.
Derrickson will direct, and the pair will co-write a new adaptation of Davis Grubb’s 1953 crime novel “The Night of the Hunter” which was previously adapted into the Robert Mitchum-led 1955 film of the same name.
Famed actor Charles Laughton directed that movie which is considered a true classic of not just the genre but overall cinema. It has influenced countless filmmakers and was selected for preservation in the United States National Registry in 1992.
The story follows Harry Powell, a murderous ex-con whose death row cellmate tells him that he hid over $10,000 in stolen cash (about $110,000 in today’s money) with his widow and kids.
Upon his release, Powell poses as a preacher. He finds the widow, woos her and marries her – all in an effort to find the loot. The second half of the story finds the young kids on the run cross country with the murderous preacher hot on their tail.
Peter Gethers and Amy Pascal will produce. Derrickson and Cargill are currently working on “The Black Phone” sequel which opens next Summer.
