“Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight has confirmed this year’s Oscar winner Cillian Murphy will return as Tommy Shelby in the movie which serves as a sequel to The BBC’s acclaimed six-season period crime drama series.
Speaking with Birmingham World, Knight confirms that filming will begin in September with the “Oppenheimer” star onboard: “He definitely is returning for it. We’re shooting it in September just down the road in Digbeth [England].”
The BBC and Netflix series premiered a decade ago and wrapped its final run in April 2022. Murphy starred as Tommy Shelby, a charismatic and cunning crime boss in Birmingham during the aftermath of World War I.
The series follows his evolution of backstreet crime lord to legitimate businessman and member of parliament. Knight first announced plans to make a film back in 2021, but it has taken a while for it to make it to fruition.
What’s not clear is how many other cast members are also returning. The project is separate from two spin-off series in the works – one set mid-20th century, the other a prequel centered on Polly Gray.
Should it film in September as planned, a late 2025 release seems likely.
