By Paramount+ has been pulling back on the number of “Star Trek” shows it has on the air, but is still moving forward with quite a bit.
Even as “Discovery” is ending, “Picard” is finished and “Prodigy” was cancelled and sold off to Netflix, “Strange New Worlds” and “Lower Decks” are still going. They will soon be joined by “Starfleet Academy” and a “Section 31” movie.
But what about “Star Trek: Legacy”? The proposed “Star Trek: Picard” spin-off has a lot of fan momentum, but the studio has shown no signs of pursuing that project.
Recently showrunner Terry Matalas suggested the project was dead as there has been no movement on it. Speaking with CBS CEO George Cheeks, Vulture asked him directly about the fate of ‘Legacy’ and the overall future of the franchise. He says it all comes down to timing:
“Star Trek remains one of the most important franchises for Paramount Global, and Paramount+ specifically. There’s so much great opportunity with the franchise, and it’s really about the cadence and the timeline of it.
We don’t want to offer up all these amazing premium drama series at once. We want to time it out appropriately. Luckily, we have this incredible partner in Alex Kurtzman, and we all work together to sort of manage long-range planning across many years, to figure out what’s the right cadence for dropping new Star Trek series.
So there’s a lot we’re focused on, but it should not suggest to you [a scaling back]. There is a tremendous amount of focus and prioritizing of the Star Trek franchise.”
‘Legacy’ is expected to follow Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) in command of the newly-rechristened USS Enterprise-G. She’s joined by Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd), Picard’s son Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) and Geordi La Forge’s daughter, Sidney (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut).
