What do you get when the director of The Sixth Sense teams up with the author of The Notebook? The answer is Remain, a supernatural romantic thriller from M. Night Shyamalan and Nicholas Sparks, and the first teaser trailer has finally arrived. Check it out in the embed above!
Starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor, Remain is based on an original story Shyamalan and Sparks created together. The unusual collaboration produced two different versions of the same story: Sparks wrote the novel, while Shyamalan wrote and directed the movie. The film is now set to hit theaters on February 5, 2027.
What Is Remain About?
Remain follows Tate Donovan as he arrives in Cape Cod to work on an architectural project while trying to put his life back together. His encounter with Wren changes everything, as the two form an immediate connection neither of them expected. But Wren’s seemingly idyllic life hides disturbing secrets, and Tate soon finds himself caught up in a mystery involving the supernatural.
Rather than having Sparks write a novelization of Shyamalan’s screenplay, the two creators approached the same story independently for their respective mediums. Sparks’ novel and Shyamalan’s movie therefore tell their own versions of the Remain story. That makes Remain an unusual Hollywood experiment. It’s not a movie adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel, it’s the cinematic counterpart to a story the two creators built together.
Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor Lead Remain
Gyllenhaal stars as Tate Donovan, with Dynevor playing Wren. The cast also includes Ashley Walters, Julie Hagerty, Jay O. Sanders, Tracy Ifeachor, Hannah James, Caleb Ruminer, Kieran Mulcare, and Maria Dizzia.
Shyamalan is writing and directing the movie, as well as producing alongside his longtime collaborators. Warner Bros. is distributing the film.
The director has previously described Remain as a supernatural love story that combines the things that interest both him and Sparks: romance, suspense, mystery, and the possibility that there are forces in the world we don’t fully understand. Shyamalan has also previously said that Remain is his highest-testing movie of his career, making the trailer’s arrival interesting for fans wondering whether his latest movie can deliver another Shyamalan-style supernatural mystery.
