By One of pop culture’s most iconic actors across multiple genres has shared a tough update regarding his recent cancer prognosis. Though he chose not to reveal the specific type of cancer, Bruce Campbell revealed that doctors expect him to live for about five more years. Rather than letting the news slow him down, the beloved genre star remains determined to stay active and focus on the present.
Speaking about his ongoing medical battle on The Adam Corolla Show, the actor said his life expectancy is five years, “give or take.”
“I’ve decided though, pretty specifically, to live with it, not die from it,” he told host Adam Carolla. “The cancer rabbit hole is enormous. You can go into focus groups of 10,000 guys who have exactly what you have. I won’t touch it with a 10 foot pole.”
Moving Forward With Ernie & Emma
Instead of letting the prediction consume him, he is grabbing life by the horns and riding like there’s no tomorrow. He’ll start by proudly promoting his new film Ernie & Emma, an independent dramedy he wrote, directed, produced, and stars in. In the slapstick drama, featuring Cerina Vincent and Ted Raimi, a widowed pear salesman, Ernie Tyler (Campbell), travels to scatter his wife’s ashes in places she specified, each location stirring memories that help him process their marriage, his work life, and his future.
“I’m moving on. I got a movie to promote. And when I promote this movie, I have nothing. I’m free and clear when I promote this movie mentally,” he said. “You have to make this decision of, ‘well, okay, but do I have to stop everything that I’m doing because of this?’ Well, no.”
The filmmaker added that he feels “perfect” right now and refuses to let the ongoing battle prevent him from living his life.
Finding Gratitude in the Present
He reiterated that forward-looking mindset during a follow-up conversation with TheWrap, reflecting on his daily reality with the illness and the overwhelming wave of support online following his initial announcement.
“My phrase is that it’s a ‘whack-a-mole’ life. Cancer’s kinda weird. It invades your world, does stuff to you, and then you address it. Half the time, you’re not even dealing with cancer, per se. You’re dealing with how it mugged you in an alley,” he shared. “The takeaway, though, is that it’s given me an appreciation for the present. I’m a guy who kinda walks leaning forward because the future always pulls me along. It’s better to be here now and appreciate what you have now. The appreciation and gratitude have come out of nowhere. It’s very hard to describe.”
When asked if he’d seen the reactions to his post about the diagnosis on social media, he noted, “Yeah. It’s ridiculous. It was really nice.”
Cancer sucks; there’s no two ways about it. If there’s any amount of comfort to be had in this situation, it’s that Campbell is staying positive, active, and in control of his emotions. Knowing the end could be sooner than planned changes everything for most people, and it’s clear he plans to enjoy life to its fullest.
