Several online scoopers have been reporting today that Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Three” will have the shortest runtime of the space opera franchise.
Both Popping Cinema and Cryptic HD QUALITY indicate that while a final runtime hasn’t been locked, they’re hearing that it’s looking to be around the 140-145 minute range.
That’s notably down from the 155 minutes of the first film and 166 minutes of the second. It’s not clear if the runtime is with or without the credits included.
Many don’t seem to be that surprised considering the source material. “Dune Messiah” marks the shortest book in the series by far. However, some casting inclusions have led to speculation that elements of the third book “Children of Dune” will be incorporated in some way.
The new film begins seventeen years later with Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet) ruling as Emperor, married to Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh), while maintaining a relationship with his concubine, Chani (Zendaya).
Forces plot against him, including the Bene Tleilax – an arcane, xenophobic sect of genetic manipulators who traffic in biological products. Villeneuve says the film will tonally lean more into a thriller and also feature more action than the previous two films.
“Dune: Part Three” also stars Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia Atreides, Jason Momoa as a new version of Duncan Idaho, and Robert Pattinson as Scytale.
The project marks Chalamet and Villeneuve’s last foray into this universe. The project, primarily shot on 65mm film stock, also has sequences shot in 15/70mm IMAX film. Scenes in the desert, of which there are plenty, were shot in IMAX Digital.
“Dune: Part Three” is slated to release in cinemas on December 18th.
