Adria Arjona is careful when deciding what to say next. A charismatic and quickly ascendent actor who stole scenes in Richard Linklater’s Hit Man and Tony Gilroy’s Andor, she is now about to be seen wielding a chainsaw and some ferocious mama bear energy in Adam Wingard’s giddy throwback to John Carpenter vibes: Onslaught. And during our conversation of that upcoming film, she is thoughtful and open, revealing how her own familial history influenced her American vet heroine stuck in a Michael Myers campaign.
Yet when the topic turns to her mystery role in the upcoming Man of Tomorrow, aka Superman 2, she becomes reticent, even cautious while considering what to say of working on set with co-stars like David Corenswet (Superman) and Milly Alcock (Supergirl).
“What can I say,” Arjona muses, “because if I say I saw them, or if I didn’t see them, [is it a revelation?] I don’t know.” What she can warmly talk about is working with a filmmaker she’s known for more than a decade. A pair of them, actually, since current DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran produced 2016’s The Belko Experiment, a clever horror/sci-fi bender that Gunn also wrote.
“It was really fun to see James Gunn,” Arjona confirms, “who’s an old friend of mine. He gave me my first movie ages ago. I was in my early 20s, and it was my first studio movie ever. [So] to go, I don’t even know, 12 years later and then be back on a set with him? It feels kind of full circle.”
Obviously both have seen their careers change extraordinarily since then, but Arjona catches herself when she says he’s changed since those heady days when he was still making R-rated genre fare.
“He’s done so much since, but he’s still the same guy that I met years ago, and I’m still the same person,” Arjona admits. “Obviously I’ve grown as an actress, so it was really cool to reunite…. On the first day on set, it can be so nerve-wracking, you don’t know who to trust, you don’t know who to lean on. You’re like, ‘Okay, how does this director work? What is his sort of vibe?’ And in this case, it was just easy because he’s my friend, and I’m like alright, I trust you. You got me, and you got my back. That was pretty cool.”
Whether that included working with Corenswet or Alcock remains to be seen, although the shroud of secrecy around Arjona’s casting has elicited an avalanche of speculation and rumors among DC faithful and comic book movie watchers. The most popular theories suggest the American star has been cast as the new DC Universe’s Wonder Woman, whilst others are convinced she will be playing a deeper cut in comic book lore apropos of Gunn’s sensibilities, including Maxima, an alien queen from the planet Almerac. We suppose the truth will come out closer to Man of Tomorrow’s 2027 release date.
What we can say for certain is that Arjona is joining quite the cast that also includes a returning Nicholas Hoult as battle-bot-ready Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Eli Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced as the Justice Gang, and German actor Lars Eidinger as the menacing new supervillain on the block, Brainiac.
