Sylvester and Dolly
The 1984 comedy Rhinestone is remembered for a lot of reasons. It has become somewhat of curiosity piece of sorts as people can reflect on the over-the-top humor that action star Sylvester Stallone brought to the movie that can be enjoyed for both ironic and unironic reasons. However, the movie came out in the heart of country star Dolly Parton’s acting run and her positive force of energy can still be seen through all the meme-worthy Stallone hijinks.
The world became a little less bright as news broke out of Dolly’s death yesterday, and people all over would pay tribute and show love for the transcendent pop culture star. Sylvester Stallone has just taken to his official Instagram to post a video paying tribute to his beloved co-star. His video was accompanied by a caption that read, “It’s hard to imagine a world without Dolly Parton. An American icon and a brilliant woman, beloved by so many. I have many fond memories of our time on the set of Rhinestone.” Then, in the video, Stallone also shares a story about him and Dolly during their time off from filming, when their attempt at riding large-bred Tennessee horses had gone hilariously awry and Dolly acted just as you would expect. It’s a really sweet story and you can check it out below.
Rhinestone
Just a few weeks ago, Dolly Parton herself would reflect on the film with a little throwback post on her official Instagram. In the post, she declared, “It was one of the best times I’ve had making a movie.” Although the movie is still widely known by reputation, Rhinestone underperformed at the time of its release, making less than $22 million on a budget of $28 million. Critics savaged the movie as well — citing Stallone’s over-the-top singing as one of the film’s lowlights. However, Parton would look back on the flop with her signature humor and wrote in her autobiography, “I guess the public didn’t want to see Sylvester Stallone do comedy – or see me do Sylvester Stallone.”
