NEON has released the final trailer for It Ends, the acclaimed horror movie from writer/director Alex Ullom, ahead of its nationwide theatrical release on August 28. It Ends is already playing in select theatres, having opened in limited release on August 21, and now you can check out the final trailer in the embed above.
What is It Ends about?
The film premiered at SXSW and later won Best First Feature at the Fantasia International Film Festival. The film’s synopsis reads:
“Some wrong turns last forever. A group of recent grads head out on a late night drive for grub, hoping to enjoy one final hangout before their paths diverge. Instead, they accidentally turn onto a never-ending, two-lane hellscape surrounded by untold horrors and cosmic forces beyond their understanding.”
The cast includes Akira Jackson as Day, Phinehas Yoon as James, Mitchell Cole as Tyler, and Noah Toth as Fisher.
While the premise sounds like a straightforward supernatural horror movie, Ullom takes It Ends in a more existential direction. The movie is less interested in throwing monsters or jump scares at its characters and more interested in what happens when people are forced to live with an impossible situation for an extended period of time.
That approach appears to have paid off. JoBlo’s Alex Maidy gave It Ends an 8/10 review, calling it a unique existential horror movie and praising Ullom’s feature debut as an impressive blend of horror, thriller, and drama. Maidy wrote that the movie manages to create a pervasive sense of dread without relying on gore or traditional jump scares, while the four central performances help sell the increasingly strange circumstances as the characters try to figure out what has happened to them.
The result is a horror movie that uses its seemingly simple premise to explore friendship, adulthood, isolation, and the seemingly endless road ahead after college.
Alex Ullom is already making his next horror movie
It Ends isn’t the only reason horror fans should keep an eye on Ullom. NEON has already begun teasing the filmmaker’s next movie, 4×4: The Event, which has assembled an impressive cast including Jaden Smith, Jacob Tremblay, Sophia Lillis, Dylan Minnette, Marcel Ruiz, Quintessa Swindell, Maddie Phillips, and It Ends‘ Mitchell Cole.
Plot details are currently being kept under wraps, but the movie reportedly follows eight contestants who participate in a livestream where they must kill or be killed using only items they can order online. Filming has already been completed, making 4×4: The Event an intriguing next step for Ullom following his feature debut.
For now, though, It Ends is the movie to watch. Take a look at the final trailer, then let us know if you’re going to catch this one during its theatrical run.
