By Deadline reports that Ryan Gosling is developing a new live-action Flintstones movie, but instead of focusing on the entire prehistoric family, this one would center around a grown-up Bamm-Bamm Rubble, the son of Fred Flintstone’s good pal Barney Rubble.
Gosling is producing the project alongside Jessie Henderson for their Open Invite banner. They’re currently looking for a writer. Aside from the Bamm-Bamm focus, plot details are being kept under wraps.
The Flintstones
The original Flintstones animated series was produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions and was the first prime-time animated series, airing on ABC from 1960 to 1966. It followed the titular family, Fred and Wilma Flintstone, as well as their friends and neighbours, Barney and Betty Rubble. And there was also Dino, the family’s pet dinosaur. Fred and Wilma’s daughter, Pebbles, arrived later in the series, followed by Bamm-Bamm, Barney and Betty’s adopted son, who is abnormally strong.
Various spin-off shows, animated movies, and more have followed over the years, and they’ve even made the leap to live-action before.
The first live-action Flintstones movie was released in 1994, with John Goodman as Fred, Rick Moranis as Barney, Elizabeth Perkins as Wilma, and Rosie O’Donnell as Betty. Despite the negative reviews, it was a big success, grossing over $341 million.
A prequel, The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, followed in 2000, but none of the original cast returned. Instead, the film starred Mark Addy as Fred, Stephen Baldwin as Barney, Kristen Johnston as Wilma, and Jane Krakowski as Betty. Again, reviews weren’t kind, and this time it was also a box-office bomb, grossing just $59.9 million.
Ryan Gosling
Gosling has a variety of big projects coming up. It was announced at San Diego Comic-Con that he would be playing Ghost Rider in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Shawn Levy will direct the movie, which is already scheduled for a July 28, 2028 release.
He’s also starring in Star Wars: Starfighter, which will hit theaters on May 28, 2027. Lucasfilm hasn’t revealed much about the film, only that it takes place five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. We caught the first footage from the film at D23, and it looked like fun.
There’s also been talk of a new Barbie sequel, but talks with the cast have stalled.
