First Photo: Animated “Texas Chain Saw Massacre”

A first photo has been released from a fully hand-drawn rotoscoped version of Tobe Hooper’s horror classic “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre”.

Art Director Paul Beck (“A Scanner Darkly”) is behind the work, leading a team that will trace the live-action version frame-by-frame to create a new spin on the cult classic.

The aim of the project is to preserve the performances, atmosphere and intensity of the original while creating an entirely new visual experience.

Dark Sky Films and Fathom Entertainment will offer a first-look behind-the-scenes featurette for the film with their one-night-only screenings of the original film’s 4K restoration in cinemas next Tuesday (August 18th).

The clip will explore the painstaking art of rotoscoping, a century-old animation technique seen on such films as Richard Linklater’s “Waking Life” and Ralph Bakshi’s “The Lord of the Rings”.

The companies are marketing the original film’s re-release as ‘Texas Chain Saw Day’. Tickets are now on sale.
