Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey ended up being more than a simple adaptation in the eyes of audiences worldwide, at least if the box office is anything to go by. The movie combines a solemn tone, war-time tale, and horror moments into a surprisingly faithful adaptation of the source material, no matter what accent the actors used.
After seeing it, we at least can’t stop thinking about it. It isn’t that we hadn’t heard, read or learned about the story of Odysseus before, but it was surprising how well the story translated to the screen. Here are what, for us, were the best moments of this unmissable film.

The Cyclops
Watching the first trailers might have led audiences to believe that there were no mythological elements in the movie, and that’s far from the truth. The rendition of the cyclops is incredibly chilling, and you really understand the danger Odysseus and his men are in during their stay in the cave.

Circe
A moment that truly felt like taken straight out of a horror film, is the meeting the group has with the witch Circe. The slow burn discovery of what is really going on is chilling, even if you already know what ultimately happens with the crew.

The Bow String
Odysseus is portrayed as a man who hates subterfuge, something peculiar considering he’s the one who came up with the famed Troyan Horse. Him playing his bow string to warn his prey, be it animal or man, is always a highlight whenever it happens throughout the film.

The Metal Giants
Possibly the biggest shift between the original tale and the adaptation are the Laestrygonians, the giants that massacre most of Odysseus’ crew. Instead of primitive giants, they are large men (twice the height of a man, but still not a giant) armor clad in steel and silver. The added complexity and mystery makes these characters even more enticing.

The Horse
We all wanted to see the classic Troyan Horse in action, and we got to see it in excruciating detail as veterans from the war remembered the tale. It ends up being less about ingenuity, and more about breaking the fundamental laws of the gods.

The Ithaca Battle
Once Odysseus returns home, he has to deal with the many suitors trying to take his island kingdom. With swiftness, guile, and skill, he takes them down one by one, demoralizing enough of them into submission. Not without taking significant punishment himself, of course.

The Athena Reveal
Was Odysseus really talking to Athena? After all, she looks exactly like the priestess that was slain before his eyes, symbolizing his guilt and trauma from the war. The gods are real enough, that much is true, but that reveal of how ‘Athena’ shows herself to Odysseus says more about him than her.

Telemachus Meeting Odysseus
Meeting his father in disguise, Telemachus fails to notice who the man really is at first. Once he notices, the meeting between the two is both an acknowledgement between strangers, and a bond of family, something that they can’t develop on due to the issues yet to resolve.

Scylla Jumpscare
As the crew feels safe after avoiding a whirlpool, they are prematurely celebrating, but not Odysseus. That’s when the monster Scylla pounces, eating six men from the crew. Due to a prophecy, Odysseus already knew this would happen, but it caught the men (and us in the audience) quite off-guard as the nightmarish creature attacked their vessel.

Argus’ Passing
After waiting two decades for his master to return, the dog Argus dies peacefully, knowing that all is now well. The story of the hound is simple yet touching, for there are few creatures as loyal as dogs in all of Earth.
