The box-office is so hot right now, all down to two major features and one or two smaller films – even as everyone else is drowning.
First up, Sony’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is continuing to do “Avatar”/”Avengers: Endgame” level business. Domestically, it took in a further $145 million this weekend – a drop of 60%.
That is actually less of a drop than ‘No Way Home’ experienced in its second weekend five years ago. The title is already at $655 million domestically after ten days and still climbing.
Overseas, the film pulled in a further $236 million for a global second weekend haul of $381 million – a drop of 48% – and has just pushed past the $1 billion mark in overseas markets alone. As such, by the end of Sunday it should be up to a total of $1.67 billion.
Nolan’s “The Odyssey” meanwhile had a global fourth weekend of $110.7 million with a further $31.5 million domestically and $79.2 million overseas. Worldwide, it’s now up to a total of $1.1 billion – making it the second biggest R-rated movie ever behind “Deadpool & Wolverine,” and has also become Nolan’s highest-grossing movie ever – overtaking the $1.085 billion haul of “The Dark Knight Rises”.
Not faring so well were the newcomers. The ‘rom-com meets The Purge’ film “One Night Only” bombed on arrival despite a lot of talk about the film’s somewhat insane premise (no unmarried sex except for one night a year). The film pulled in $5.7 million in its opening weekend and a concerning B+ CinemaScore. Faring worse were “Super Troopers 3” with $4 million and “Ice Cream Man” with $2 million.
Two shining lights were the Anthony Bourdain biopic “Tony” and the Gillian Anderson slasher film “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma”. They had opening theater averages of $58,165 across six screens and $50,300 across five screens, respectively.
