Disney and Hulu have released the trailer for the never-before-seen R-rated new director’s cut of the second “The X-Files” film, 2008’s “The X-Files: I Want to Believe” which premieres on Hulu on August 14th.
Carter first teased this new version a year ago when appearing on David Duchovny’s podcast Fail Better, saying that when creating the film he ‘made it too scary’ and had to cut it for release to get a PG-13 rating.
Almost twenty years on, he says: “Now I have a chance to go back and make the scary movie that I always intended”. The result is this new version titled “The X-Files: I Want to Believe Vrach Frankenshteyn”.
The new version is said to “faithfully restore the filmmaker’s original vision” and offer a “darker, frightening thriller exploring a real-life Dr. Frankenstein”. It’s not clear the extent of the changes to the new cut.
The story follows Mulder and Scully, who have been out of the FBI for several years, with Mulder living in isolation and Scully having become a doctor at a Catholic hospital, where she has formed a bond with a critically ill child patient.
When an FBI agent is mysteriously kidnapped and a defrocked Catholic priest claims to be experiencing psychic visions of the endangered agent, Scully is asked to bring Mulder back to the bureau to consult on the case because of his work with psychics.
Forced to confront the ghosts of their past, the partners must navigate a chilling winter landscape and an even darker human monstrosity. The truth of these crimes is out there somewhere … and it will take Mulder and Scully to find it.
The cast includes David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Amanda Peet, Billy Connolly, Alvin ‘Xzibit’ Joiner, Callum Keith Rennie and Mitch Pileggi.
