We all have a fandom that we love dearly, and being able to express that devotion means a lot to some people. You can buy all kinds of merchandise to support what you love, but getting a tattoo done is one of the ultimate actions a fan can take to demonstrate their commitment.
It’s a shame, then, that a lot of the tattoos these fans get aren’t all that great. Here, we’ve compiled some of the best examples of times when, while the idea is nice, you shouldn’t really go through with it in practice. Just enjoy what you like and leave your body alone… or hire a better artist.
Sponge Bob Bike
Granted, this is meant to be taken as a joke, but the low quality of the character depiction speaks for itself. This looks like Bob went on a hike on dry land.
Hello Kitty Centipide
There’s a world where this tattoo makes sense, and even looks good. But as the centerpiece of your face, well, that’s just not it. Matches the ear piece though.
Flesh Carving Lightsaber
While there’s a lot to be said about the quality and execution of this Star Wars themed tattoo, the main issue here is the misalignment of each lightsaber part. The illusion is completely lost once you notice it.
Crayon Blastoise
This classic illustration of the water-type Pokemon is just sad. The line work could use some more time in the oven, but the color is far too opaque. At that point, just keep it monochrome.
Lego Guy
This poor lego guy is widely disproportionate compared to how real lego toys look. All the artist had to do was copy the base shape of a lego, and they couldn’t even do that.
Beyond Looking Good
It’s always a sad time to be a Beyond Good and Evil fan, since Ubisoft seems unable or unwilling to make a proper sequel. It’s even sadder if you have to walk around with this tattoo on your leg.
The Gunisher
At first glance, this may not look that bad, but hand tattoos are a little tricky. Imagine this with a sleeve, and you’ll notice this looks like a lot of things, but certainly not the Punisher logo.
Bent Gameboy
There is some quality to this Game Boy Color tattoo, but the craftsmanship of the artist isn’t always the issue. Here, the problem lies in the placement; in a flat area like the back, this would look good, but here it just doesn’t work.
Adventure Time’s Over
This charming fella is from Adventure Time, and it may not look that bad, but give it time. It’s so small and lacking in any form of detail, that it will soon turn into a color smudge rather than careful skin art.
Mad Maxxing
That’s somehow meant to be Mel Gibson. If it wasn’t for the iconic leather jacket (which still looks bad), you’d need to know about this pose in particular in order to even know what franchise this is from. It’s Mad Max, by the way.
Placement is Everything
This panel is from the works of Junji Ito, a celebrated horror manga artist. The art itself is fine, the problem here is the strange placement, so bad it takes precedence over everything else.
It’s Awful
This was never going to be the greatest tattoo ever, but the artist clearly had somewhere to be when making the lower half of the clown.
Faded Desert
This is an artist’s depiction of Crimson Desert’s main artwork, and it lacks all depth or character from said artwork. The face in particular seems to have been mutilated.
Sad Lions
This tattoo from The Lion King raises more questions than anything else we’ve shown. Was this drawn from memory? Was the person paid to have this inked on themselves? We will never know.
