On Friday, Amazon Prime Video released the first trailer for its “Blade Runner 2099” TV series and announced a November 25th premiere date.
The reveal came following the series scoring a panel at San Diego Comic-Con. Showrunner Silka Luisa was on hand for that panel and afterwards gave a surprising update.
Speaking with Collider’s Steve Weintraub, Luisa confirmed that this will not be an ongoing show. In fact, she says the series was always intended to be a limited series with the entire story playing out over eight episodes:
“It was always considered a limited series. Part of making the transition from film to TV is a really big jump for something that’s as cinematic as Blade Runner, and so, in that sense, it was really important to us that we told a story that, in a way, is like a movie in the sense that there’s a beginning, there’s a middle, and there’s an end.
So we went into it with Alcon, with all of our producing partners, knowing we really want to tell a complete story. Eight episodes — I mean, eight’s my lucky number, that’s the number I would have picked, but it felt like the right amount for the story we were planning on telling.”
Set within the world of the films and a half-century on from the events of Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049,” this portrays a radically transformed Los Angeles where humanity is no longer in control, and the replicants have won after an uprising.
They are now the power brokers of the city and humans are second-class citizens. Michelle Yeoh stars as Olwen, a replicant Blade Runner hunting a group of missing rogue replicants while approaching the predetermined end of her own lifespan.
Hunter Schafer plays Cora, a human fugitive who has spent her life running from Blade Runners but must now pretend to be one. She joins Olwen’s search for the missing replicants.
“Blade Runner 2049” scribe Michael Green helped develop the project while original “Blade Runner” director Ridley Scott executive produces and advised on the series.
