Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel’s recent live-action “Masters of the Universe” film, an adaptation of the classic 1980s “He-Man” cartoon, is coming to streaming sooner than expected.
The title appears to be bypassing the recent traditional path of hitting PVOD first and is instead going straight to SVOD – the title is set to be available to stream for Amazon Prime Video subscribers from this Wednesday, July 22nd.
That’s a jump from screen to a subscription streaming service of just 47 days (it opened on June 5th). Despite quite good reviews, the Travis Knight-directed feature sadly was a financial failure at the box-office – taking in just $113.3 million worldwide on a $170 million budget.
Amazon MGM’s domestic distribution chief, Kevin Wilson, previously indicated that the film’s streaming release will be very important for the film saying the film’s theatrical run “validates our holistic distribution strategy – building awareness and engagement that will carry well beyond the theatrical window.”
In the film, ten-year-old Adam Glenn crash-lands on his mother’s home planet, Earth, separating him from his ancestor’s Power Sword of Grayskull.
Two decades later, he (Nicholas Galitzine) takes his sword back and dons the mantle of He-Man as he battles for his home planet, Eternia, against the evil forces of Skeletor (Jared Leto).
The film also stars Idris Elba as Man at Arms, Camila Mendes as Teela, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Kristen Wiig as Roboto, Morena Baccarin as the Sorceress, Charlotte Riley as Queen Marlena, Hafthor Bjornsson as Goat Man, James Purefoy as King Randor, Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson as Fisto, Kojo Attah as Tri-Klops, Jon Xue Zhang as Ram-Man, Sasheer Zamata as Suzie and Christian Vunipola as Hussein.
