Xolo Maridueña (“Cobra Kai”) will reprise his Blue Beetle role in James Gunn’s currently in production “Superman” sequel “Man of Tomorrow” according to multiple trade reports.

Maridueña played the character in the 2023 film “Blue Beetle,” starring as Jaime Reyes – a recent college graduate who gains superpowers when an alien scarab latches onto him.

Blue Beetle was the first Latino superhero to lead a standalone film in the DC universe. Gunn previously dubbed him the “first DCU character” indicating that he had plans to incorporate the character again despite the film being outside Gunn’s DC Universe.

The film was the lowest-grossing DCEU movie of all time at $130.8 million worldwide, but did score well on streaming. It’s not clear how much of a change will be made to the character ahead of his DCU appearance.

The new film sees Superman (David Corenswet) forced to team up with his adversary Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) as they work to defeat an even bigger threat: the super-intelligent villain Brainiac (Lars Eidinger).

“Man of Tomorrow” is due in cinemas on July 9th 2027. Maridueña recently completed filming his new role of Portgas D. Ace on the third season of Netflix’s live-action “One Piece” series.
