StudioCanal has premiered the trailer for their upcoming re-release of “Heat” and “The Insider” director Michael Mann’s iconic 1986 thriller “Manhunter” to mark its 40th anniversary.

Dubbed “Manhunter: The Final Cut,” the new 4K restoration gets a theatrical re-release on July 24th in the U.S. and the United Kingdom on September 25th with a home entertainment version likely hitting sometime after that.

The feature is a film adaptation of Thomas Harris’ “Red Dragon” novel, the first to feature the character of imprisoned cannibalistic psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter whom in this version is played by Brian Cox.

William Peterson stars in the film as former FBI profiler Will Graham who comes out of retirement to find and apprehend an enigmatic serial killer Francis Dolarhyde/The Tooth Fairy (the late Tom Noonan).

In doing so, he must confront the demons of his past and meet with Lecktor (different spelling in this film), who nearly killed Graham years before. Also starring are Joan Allen, Dennis Farina, Stephen Lang and Kim Greist.

Though a box-office bomb on release with mixed reviews, it has grown in estimation with time. It’s the first adaptation of the story, with Brett Ratner’s 2002 film “Red Dragon” and Bryan Fuller’s “Hannibal” also adapting the work.
