The underwhelming box-office opening streak looks set to continue.
After “Supergirl” faceplanted and “Minions” came in with a franchise worst, the live-action “Moana” opens this weekend and projected numbers are being revised downwards.
Last month’s tracking numbers suggested the film could have a strong domestic opening of $85 million, but now those numbers are being revised downwards with a $60-70 million figure being touted by the same trades.
Deadline indicates the film will likely debut to $60-65 million domestically for the three-day and $70-75 million internationally for the five-day (it opens Wednesday in various markets), which would result in a $130 million opening weekend total. Global Box-Office suggests that the domestic opening weekend number could be as low as $45-50 million.
Either way, it’s one of the weaker worldwide openings for a Disney live-action feature – for comparison, “The Little Mermaid” live-action remake debuted to $186 million.
The number is also only one-third of the $386 million debut of the animated “Moana 2” and about on par with the $56.6 million three-day opening of the original 2016 animated film.
“Evil Dead Burn” is also opening this weekend, and it also appears to be slipping. Last Friday, Empire City Box-Office was touting high estimates of a $25-35 million domestic opening. Now, the trades are reporting the film will likely open under $20 million – coming in behing the $24.5 million start of “Evil Dead Rise”.
All seems to be in a lull ahead of the genuine events of “The Odyssey” and “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” arriving in cinemas.
