No-one was a winner at the July 4th holiday weekend box-office.
Universal’s “Minions & Monsters” came in far behind projections domestically at $36 million for the three-day and $61 million for the five-day.
It’s by far the lowest start for the franchise, the three-day a full $20 million below the $56 million debut of the first “Despicable Me”.
The five-day was exactly half what both “Minions: The Rise of Gru” and “Despicable Me 4” scored in 2022 and 2024 respectively with the blame being put on audience fatigue with the franchise.
Saving its bacon is international, which scored $86 million over the three-day weekend and brought the film’s worldwide total to $159.8 million by the end of Sunday.
No-one is saving “Supergirl”. The film had an utterly pitiful 77% decline in its second weekend with $8.6 million for the three-day, a bigger drop than “Morbius” (74%) but less than either “The Marvels” (78%) or “Joker: Folie a Deux” (81%).
It has earned $99.5 million globally to date. Losses for the film were calculated at $100-120 million should it gross $200 million worldwide – the chances of it doing even that though are getting slim.
“Young Washington” was a winner, though boisterious estimates of $20.8 million for its debut have now been revised down to $19.3 million after a softer-than-expected Sunday turnout. It’s still a win for Angel Studios.
Certainly falling flat on its face was “Jackass: Best and Last” which saw $2.7 million this weekend – a 68% decline. It now stands at $20 million worldwide and looks certain to live up to its title as it’ll likely be the lowest-grossing instalment of the five films.
