Warner Bros. Animation has announced that animated feature films based on the “Thundercats” and “The Powerpuff Girls” properties are in the works.
The news was revealed as part of the Warner Bros. Animation panel at this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival and Market in France, with both projects said to be in active development.
The late 1980s Rankin-Bass animated series “Thundercats” revolved around a group of humanoid cats who must flee their planet of Thundera after it’s destroyed. Crash-landing on another planet, Third Earth, they must thwart the evil sorcerer Mumm-Ra who is bent on killing them off.
At last report, filmmaker Adam Wingard had been developing a ‘hybrid CGI feature adaptation’ which he was co-writing with Simon Barrett. No word if that’s still in play.
Meanwhile the studio also confirmed a new “The Powerpuff Girls” film was in the works alongside a “Prehistoria” film directed by Vivienne Medrano (aka VivziePop) and the previously announced “Bad Fairies” which will see Serrano Su-Ling Bliss, James Acaster, Dee Bradley Baker join Cynthia Erivo in the voice cast.
Warner Bros. Animation also unveiled its new introduction clip for films which you can see below. It will first be seen with the upcoming “The Cat in the Hat” animated feature.
