Did acclaimed “Challengers” and “Queer” scribe Justin Kuritzkes work on Marvel Studios’ “Spider-Man: Brand New Day”?
That seems to be the takeaway following a comment from actor Tom Holland during his delightful hour-long chat with Amy Poehler on her Good Hang podcast yesterday.
Holland recounts filming a scene for the new movie that wasn’t quite working, and he flagged it with director Destin Daniel Cretton which led to them redoing it the next day:
“What I love about Destin is he’s so calm. There’s nothing that could throw him off. And he just kind of listened, and he sat down, and he was like, ‘Well, what is it that you’re trying to feel?’ And I told him, and he went, ‘Yeah, you’re right. That’s exactly what we need to be feeling.’
So, he said to the crew, ‘Everyone can go home. We’re going to sit down, and we’re going to rewrite this scene with the writer, Justin,’ who is such a talent. And we came in the next day, we reshot the scene, and I’m so glad that we did because it sings in the movie, it really does.”
The mention of the writer Justin got several people’s attention as returning writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers are currently still the only credited names.
Holland previously indicated that when he signed on to film “The Odyssey,” production of ‘Brand New Day’ was delayed six months – but that delay ‘saved’ the film as it was used to completely overhaul the script.
This has led to talk that the ‘Justin’ he means is Justin Kuritzkes, according to both Nexus Point News and The Playlist with the former saying that the scribe was on set daily.
Kuritzkes most recently penned the upcoming Austin Butler-led Don Winslow adaptation “City on Fire” and was a candidate to tackle the James Bond script before Steven Knight took over.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” opens in cinemas on July 31st with special preview screenings for Prime customers on July 29th.
