No, not Indiana Jones, but indie movies. Social media has been interesting this weekend, everyone is talking about the comparison between Mando and Grogu vs Obsession and Backrooms at the box office. The number has been interesting.

Firstly, the costs of the movies. As we know, Mando and Grogu is a Star War. The estimated cost of the movie is about $165 mill, although this doesn’t include the advertising budget.

On the other side of the coin are the two indie movies.  Obsession comes in with a budget of around $750,000, while Backrooms, being produced by A24, comes in at $10 mill. Again, neither of these includes advertising.

You don’t have to be good at maths to know there’s a huge difference there. It’s usually said that a movie has to make three times its production budget just to break even. That means, Mando needs at least $500 mill, Obsession needs half a mill, and Backrooms needs $30 mill. Again, this is all estimated.

Box Office Takings

So, what has each movie earned since their release?

Mando and Grogu – $137 mill
Obsession – $148 mill
Backrooms – $118 mill

Mando had a drop of nearly 70% this weekend.

Obsession, in its third week, saw an increase at the box office. Yes, after being out and word of mouth, it had the numbers go up!

Taking money at the box office is a big thing, yes, they make money from merchandise and streaming, but the takings at the cinema can show the interest in the movie and the public’s ‘wanting’.

A Star Wars movie, which should be a license to print money, is losing out to a couple of indie movies. Is the world healing?

Staying at the box office

On top of that, it’s been reported that IMAX is pulling Mando and Grogu from some of their cinemas for Masters of the Universe. It originally had a three-week slot booked, but the ticket sales for Master of the Universe were proving more popular, so they pulled it.

Obsession was supposed to be on streaming tomorrow; however, they have said they will be keeping it in cinemas. With the money it’s making, they want to make more. While the numbers are going up, you might as well take advantage of it.

We’re taking bets on when Disney will release Mando and Grogu on streaming. I’m calling it in another week or so; it’s not like the box office is making them money.

What’ll be great is when they do drop it on streaming, it’ll be their number 1 streaming movie in the world! Yes, we know it will; people will happily watch it when it’s included in their Disney+ subscription. Just no one wanted to go to the cinema to see it. Here’s a pre-made, AI-generated poster for them.

I haven’t written one of these before; it’s usually Stark. I have checked everything, and I hope it makes sense.
