Sheik’s own Instagram account also alerted fans to the unfortunate news, writing, “It is with profound sadness that we confirm the passing of Duncan Sheik. The world has lost a singular talent, and deeply influential voice in music and theater. From his Grammy-nominated hit “Barely Breathing” to his groundbreaking, Tony and Grammy Award-winning work on Spring Awakening, Duncan’s artistry touched many and leaves an indelible mark on the cultural landscape.”
From Jersey to the Ivy League: Early Life and Musical Roots
Duncan Sheik’s journey started on November 18, 1969, in Montclair, New Jersey, before he bounced between his parents’ place in South Carolina and his grandparents’ home back in Jersey. His early musical spark came straight from his grandmother, a Juilliard grad who put him at the piano keys and helped nurture his craft from the ground up.
After graduating from Phillips Academy in 1988, he headed off to Brown University, laying the groundwork for what would become a celebrated career across both the airwaves and the stage.
