A little over two months to go before a prime Marvel character returns to the big screen, and the current phase of the MCU heads towards another Avengers-shaped climax later this year. Spider-Man is back, and Empire Magazine has published one of its in-depth feature pieces on the upcoming release.
We already know that this movie picks up five years after the last instalment, and follows Peter Parker as a young adult living a solitary existence, having voluntarily erased himself from the lives and memories of those he loves to protect them.
He is now entirely focused on crime-fighting at a local level in New York City. As the stress begins to take hold, a surprising physical evolution starts to affect him. Unfortunately, this happens just as a strange new pattern of crimes demands his attention.
Speaking to the magazine, Marvel Studios’ big cheese Kevin Feige claims the movie will feature the most comics-accurate version of Spider-Man they have ever done:
“It is the first Spider-Man film that we’ve made in the MCU that is focused on the classic elements of Spider-Man. He’s doing the Spidey thing of living in a rather sad, small apartment, listening to the police scanner, and going out and using his great power responsibly.”
Director Destin Daniel Cretton has spoken about Peter Parker’s motivation and his state of mind this time around:
“He is dedicating his entire existence to his job. That’s the core theme that I find incredibly relatable. I think most people at certain points in our lives have gone through loss. At least for me, and I think for many people, the result can be: ‘Screw it. I’m just going to work. I’m going to do nothing else but work.’ That’s obviously not the most healthy state.”
Meanwhile, lead Tom Holland has spoken about not being in the role forever, not that he is turning 30 this summer:
“For whoever’s next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter. Whatever that looks like, I don’t know. But if I could do what Downey did for me, then I would be so content swinging off into the sunset.”
He also said he was invited into the writers’ room this time and shared ideas during the creative process. As a result, his initial pitch formed the basis of part of the story:
“My pitch when I came to the table with it was called ‘Spider-Puberty’. What happens if Peter Parker is losing control and things are changing? ‘Spider-Puberty’ was my tagline pitch to the studio, which was immediately shot down. But they liked the kernel of the idea.”
In other Spider-Man: Brand New Day news, there is a photo out there of a toy from the upcoming merchandise blitz that would seem to indicate that Bruce Banner will transform into Savage Hulk in this movie. This could fit in with the rumors that the Battleworld we will see in the upcoming Secret Wars will feature Hulk in some kind of World War Hulk adjacent plot point.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day features Zendaya, Jon Bernthal, Sadie Sink, Liza Colón-Zayas, Mark Ruffalo, and Keith David. A new trailer is expected to ship with Masters Of The Universe next weekend. The movie lands in theaters on July 31st, 2026.
