One of the few quiet weekends of the Summer, today sees three smaller films opening between the larger juggernauts of “Mortal Kombat II” last week and “The Mandalorian & Grogu” next week.

The bigger of the two seems to be Curry Barker’s horror film “Obsession,” which is coming in way ahead of expectations. The Focus Features title reportedly pulled in $6.2 million on Friday and is headed for a third-place debut of around $14 million – nearly double what was projected earlier this week.

Not faring so well is Guy Ritchie’s Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal-led “In the Grey,” which pulled in just $1 million on Friday and is geared for $3 million for its opening weekend. Also not great is the smaller budgeted revenge genre piece “Is God Is,” which is aiming for a $2.3 million three-day haul.

While Ritchie’s film has drawn decidedly mixed reviews, the other two openers have pulled in some of the best reviews of the year so far. Also opening is Paramount’s 40th anniversary re-release of “Top Gun” which is looking to come in at just under $3 million.

“Michael” is expected to reclaim the top spot this weekend, the title showing stronger hold than anything else in the market with the title looking to draw in over $25 million in its fourth weekend – a drop of just 34%, boosted by some extra IMAX and PLF screens.

In second place will be “The Devil Wears Prada 2” which looks to be having a $20 million third weekend, down 53%. “Mortal Kombat II” will come in fourth with $13 million – down 66% in its second weekend. Fifth will be “The Sheep Detectives” with around $10 million – a drop of just 37% in its second weekend.
