Starring in another spy movie so soon after ending the Mission: Impossible franchise could be seen as a big risk for Tom Cruise, but then again, risk is his middle name.

It isn’t actually his middle name. His middle name is actually Cruise, and his surname is really Mapother IV, which sounds like a planet in Star Trek.

Still, you get the idea…

Rumor has it that Edge of Tomorrow 2 won’t be happening any time soon, and Top Gun 3 won’t shoot until late next year at the earliest. So Cruise finds himself with a gap in his schedule.

Any normal mortal would enjoy the time off. Head to a beach. Read a few books. Not Tom Cruise, though. He needs the work like the work needs him.

So according to The InSneider he has entered discussions to play the lead role in Doppelgänger, which is a brand new spy thriller over at Paramount.

This is from Searching director Aneesh Chaganty who co-wrote the script with Dan Frey.

The script is said to now be in the process of being tailored to Cruise as the lead.

If he signs, then he would play a CIA Agent named Veer who discovers that Russian intelligence has found a Brazilian man who is his exact double, intending to replace him as a covert mole inside the CIA.

No doubt the mole can be identified as not really being Cruise, because at some point it will be revealed he owns a phone, and accidentally brings his B game.

Paramount has made Doppelgänger a priority as David Ellison is personally championing its development.
