It was a fight, but ultimately 20th Century Studios’ “The Devil Wears Prada 2” managed to hold off competition from “Mortal Kombat II” at the box-office in a flawless victory.

The fashionable sequel retained the crown domestically with $43 million – a drop of 44% from its debut – and easily took the lead ahead of the ‘Kombat’ follow-up, which landed a still quite strong $40 million in second place.

Internationally, ‘Prada’ was a much bigger event, the film earning a further $75.8 million overseas in its second weekend (dropping only 46%). As a result, the film now sits at a $433 million worldwide gross so far – $145 million of that States-side and essentially double that from overseas markets. It has helped Disney push past the $2 billion global mark for this year.

The ‘Kombat’ sequel, on the other hand, had a fairly soft start overseas with just $23 million, bringing its worldwide debut up to $63 million. While it’ll certainly overtake the 2021 original, the debut is seen as underwhelming, with the delay from last October to May having seemingly backfired for Warners.

“Michael” was third domestically with $36.5 million, along with a further $58.5 million overseas. With a great hold at around 32%, the film has hit a worldwide gross of $577 million so far and is looking like it will be a bigger hit than “Bohemian Rhapsody” when all is said and done.

“The Sheep Detectives” was fourth with $15.9 million domestically and a further $12.1 million overseas, while the “Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard & Soft” concert film pulled in $7.5 million domestically and $12.6 million overseas – giving it a worldwide debut matching its $20 million production budget.

Also of note were the second weeks of “Hokum,” “Deep Water” and “Animal Farm” which saw domestic drops of 49%, 63% and a disastrous 80%, respectively. The three titles occupied the 8th-10th slots with the latter two earning well under $1 million each.
