Was it ever really in the slightest bit of doubt? Not really. But HBO has officially greenlit Harry Potter for a second season more than half a year before the first season even drops on HBO. Still, if you can’t be confident about Harry Potter, what can you be confident in? Even as I type this, The Mandalorian and Grogu hoves into view, so maybe I should just change tack here…
Season one adapts Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and this newly ordered season will adapt Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. This is where things could get interesting…
This is because the book was considered the weakest of the series, as was the movie based on it. However, now that the full story has unfolded, looking back, you can see the story contains many of the vitally important details that will come to define Harry’s relationship with Voldemort, and much of what made Voldemort who he became. This is particularly important, given that the series should allow far more time for these overlooked plot points to breathe.
For the second season, Succession writer Jon Brown has also been promoted to co-showrunner alongside Francesca Gardiner. Not sure what this means has been going on behind the scenes? Gardiner said in the announcement statement:
“As we have laid out our plans for the overlapping production schedules to finish season one by Christmas and to return to production for season two this autumn, it has become clear that bringing on a co-showrunner is the key to maintaining our momentum.
I’ve loved working with Jon from the very first day we met on Succession through to these recent times together on Harry Potter. Not only do I have huge admiration for his writing, but he’s also a brilliant collaborator and a lovely person. We are lucky to have him.”
Big newcomers for the second story include the characters of Gilderoy Lockhart, and Tom Riddle, both of whom have impact on the story in future instalments.
All eyes are now on Christmas, when season 1 of Harry Potter will be revealed to the world.
