Lionsgate really, really, really needed a hit, and have got one. Michael landed at the box office and shrugged off weak reviews and accusations of ‘whitewashing’ some more troubling aspects of his life.
It scored $97 million domestically and $120.4 million overseas for a $217.4 million worldwide opening weekend.
The King of Pop high at the box office
This makes Michael the second biggest domestic opening weekend of the year so far, behind The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
It also had the biggest domestic opening day of the year at $40 million, and is Lionsgate’s best performance for a decade.
It is doing well in IMAX, with a 48% hold on those screens.
Second and third place are showing some legs, in the form of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($21.2 million) and Project Hail Mary ($13.2 million).
Behind them is Lee Cronin’s The Mummy is performing well for Universal, giving them another $5.5 million to take the global total to over $65 million. A decent return on the tightly budgeted horror.
There is not a lot happening elsewhere in the box office ranking this week, except for at the bottom where the Aaron Taylor-Johnson-led heist meets bomb thriller Fuze probably underperformed, with an 11th place debut and just over $1 million domestically.
Now May is in sight, and this means summer movie season is getting ready to roll. Mortal Kombat II and The Devil Wears Prada 2 are imminent, and then all eyes will turn to The Mandalorian And Grogu to see what life there is in Star Wars on the big screen these days, then before you know, it Spider-Man will be here.
