Long discussed, recently kicked into high gear, and now confirmed, with a new title. Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski’s movie will now be known as Miami Vice ’85. The project is set up at Universal Studios, who confirmed more details to Variety last night.
Oscar nominee Austin Butler and Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan have been cast in the roles of James ‘Sonny’ Crockett and Ricardo ‘Rico’ Tubbs, respectively.
Dan Gilroy has finalised the script from an earlier draft by Eric Warren Singer. The story is therefore confirmed as a period piece exploring the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami as it follows the two detectives who work undercover among the high-rolling criminals of the city’s underworld.
Now, use your contacts and cast Tom Cruise as the head bad guy.
The project is long-rumored to be inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the original television series from Michael Mann.
Dylan Clark and Kosinski serve as producers on the film. This project will shoot this year and arrive in theaters on August 6th next year, which makes it 21 years after the last Miami Vice movie attempt with Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx, and now I feel so fucking old. Jesus Christ.
