It was always expected, but now it looks like it has been confirmed. Current movie Star Trek, the so-called Kelvin Timeline, is dead.
A feature in Variety on Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison has confirmed that a reboot is in order. The studio has moved on from idea of bringing back Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and the rest of the ensemble from the J.J. Abrams reboot.
The same article highlights that Paramount is de-prioritizing some projects but looking to increase their release pace, and Star Trek is a key property for them in this strategy.
Ellison had previously talked about a “holistic approach” – meaning TV and movies would be taken in the round. This probably also sounds the death knell for the current television evolution, from Star Trek: Discovery through to the upcoming Starfleet Academy.
Few tears will be shed in fandom.
Everyone from Matt Shakman to Quentin Tarantino had taken a run at Star Trek on the big screen since the last instalment, Star Trek Beyond.
Toby Haynes got closest, with an 2026 window picked out, but nothing movies forward on that.
