The Game Awards producer Geoff Keighley has confirmed that you don’t have to be a full new video game to win Game of the Year.
In an updated FAQ posted to the award show’s website, it has been confirmed that DLC, expansions, remakes, and remasters are all eligible for the shortlists for each category at this year’s Game Awards.
The news comes ahead of the shortlists for this year’s awards being announced on Monday. Jury members for The Game Awards were reportedly made aware of the inclusion of DLC, remakes, and remasters ahead of submitting their nominations.
The statement on the website reads:
“The Game Awards aims to recognize the best creative and technical work each year, irrespective of the format of that content’s release. Expansion packs, new game seasons, DLCs, remakes, and remasters are eligible in all categories, if the jury deems the new creative and technical work to be worthy of a nomination. Factors such as the newness of the content and its price/value should be taken into consideration.”
This comes as the DLC pack “Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree” is tied with “Astro Bot” and “Metaphor: ReFantazio” at 94/100 on Metacritic as the highest rated games of the year.
The news means ‘Erdtree’ is eligible for the top Game of the Year honor, as is remakes like “Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth” & “Silent Hill 2”, remasters like “The Last of Us Part II” and “Horizon: Zero Dawn,” and new seasons like “Destiny 2: The Final Shape”.
Last year’s Game Awards achieved the event’s viewership record with an estimated 118 million livestreams. This year’s tenth annual ceremony will take place December 13th at the traditional venue of the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
